Purpose and areas of usage
Developed polypropylene (PP) monofilaments with antimicrobial properties contain antibacterial additives: polyhexamethylene guanidine chloride (PHMG - C) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), or a combined silver / silica (Ag / SiO2) nanodobacterium. By their properties, monofilaments are at the level of foreign analogues and can be used in surgery as suture materials and for the manufacture of mesh implants.

Innovation of the development is to create an effective way to modify PP threads by simultaneously introducing a bactericidal substance and a nano filler. The use of combined Ag / SiO2 nanoparticles provides a high prolonged antimicrobial effect of the products and reduces their toxicity and cost through the reduction of silver content. Pre - clinical studies showed that the developed monofilaments are characterized by high antibacterial and mechanical parameters and good manipulative properties. The need for suture surgical materials is about 4 million m/year, and mesh implants (of different sizes) - more than 50 thousand pieces / year. Today in Ukraine there is no production of antimicrobial polypropylene monofilaments, which determines the demand for development in the domestic market.
